Dreamers
Ah, the left with its romantic naive dream of helping those who needed help, of increasing prosperity and equalityаthrough forced government intervention, all for a greater good of creating aаnew type of person living and thriving in a new type of world.а
а
Ah, but when the dreamers toiled to make that dream a realityаthey created a nightmare for millions.а Now, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Soviet Unionа15 years ago, the left is on the verge of collapse whileаits nightmarish visionаhas degenerated into a neo fascist movement. Soаargues Professor Andrei S. Markovits in this provocative article.
а
Believing thatа"a conjuncture of social, economic, generational and cultural shifts changed the very identity of the left over the past twenty five years" he "argue(s) for the primacy of economy and society over politics."
а
Although I believe he neglects the impact of technological advances and scientific discoveries that came mainly from the non—leftist countries, again primarily the US, that contributed to the economic and social changes this analysis provides a map into the ossified, and still dangerous,аleft of today.
