Balance, NY Times-style
Front—page, bottom right—hand corner: fate of Tillman (death) contrasted with fate of returning black female soldier from Iraq (homelessness, with child).
Meanwhile, the Sudanese genocide is on page 2, while stories of Einstein's personal idiosyncrasies are page 1 material.
While the NY Times and others constantly portray the military in a negative light, containing the "losers" of society (either rednecks or the unemployable), they never, ever talk about the military as one of the institutions that have helped many in the lower socio—economic classes get their feet in the door, reform themselves, etc. Colin Powell, the liberals' acceptable military man (though less so as time goes by) is an example, but note is never made of his rise via the mobility ladder of the military.
