Boots Finally on the Ground...to Fight Global Warming
Of all of President Obama’s failings – and there are too many to count – his abysmal performance as commander-in-chief is the most egregious. Hillary Clinton’s 3am wake-up call ad was prescient (if not obvious), and yet Obama won two presidential elections with an electorate that fell back to sleep after their 9/11 wake-up call.
However, the latest announcement that the Pentagon is unveiling its comprehensive plan for the military’s response to climate change – at the same time that ISIS is announcing its plans to behead yet another American and is closing in on Kobani in Syria and Baghdad in Iraq – is a breathtaking measure even from this administration. Yes, history books will be replete with analysis of how it came to pass that Americans chose their own demise by electing Obama – a war-fearing, spineless socialist who promised to transform America while actually intending to transform the world. But as we live through this nonsense, it matters little that historical analysis will bear out Obama’s gross negligence and willful misconduct.
According to the DOD website, “[t]he mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country.” Perhaps these words are but a remnant of the Bush years, because this administration has done next to nothing to provide the forces we need to deter war and protect our country. Charles Krauthammer observed that Obama’s hapless air campaign against ISIS “looks as if [he] is not serious about this at all.”
What the Pentagon is apparently serious about is adapting to climate change. According to its “2014 Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap”:
It’s necessary to work with regional partners to address the risks posed by climate change, [Hagel] said. The U.S. military has completed a joint assessment with officials from Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, and Trinidad and Tobago on the implications.
So the triumvirate of Obama, Kerry, and Hagel cannot even form an international coalition to fight ISIS, but look at the success they have with fighting climate change – even Trinidad and Tobago are on board! In the face of the administration’s latest diplomatic malfeasance, in which our NATO ally, Turkey, denied Susan Rice’s latest Sunday-morning talking point that the U.S. can use bases in Turkey to launch attacks against ISIS, The Three Stooges keep bumbling along while shirking their primary responsibility to the nation.
One could argue that sending 3,000 troops to Liberia to assist in the treatment and containment of Ebola is to protect the security of our country. However, as we learn of the failures of the medical protocols that led to a nurse in Dallas contracting the disease, one wonders how 3,000 U.S. troops will return home without risking the spread of the disease across the nation. Not surprisingly, Obama does not have a strategy for Ebola any more than for Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, or Iran.
But back to global warming. The Pentagon’s report asserts “decisively that climate change poses an immediate threat to national security” and “lays out a road map for how the military will adapt to rising sea levels, more violent storms and widespread droughts.” No mention of growing polar ice caps, failed computer models, no global warming in 17 years, and no major hurricanes making landfall in over 3,000 days.
And John Kerry, whose obsession with climate change borders on Al Gore mania, pronounces that “[l]ife as you know it on Earth ends” if those of us with common sense (aka skeptics) are wrong.
As the White House and Departments of Defense and State insist upon utilizing our nation’s military and other resources to fight climate change, Obama’s war against ISIS is a sham and a disaster. The U.K.’s Independent ran the following headline: “War against Isis: US air strategy in tatters as militants march on.” The use of the word “strategy” is laughable, since the administration admitted that they do not have one. But do not fear; Hagel has a strategy for fighting climate change!
Another headline from the U.K.’s Telegraph: “American Way: The US is worried, but more than anything, frustrated and confused by Isil.” And as Obama tweeted on Tuesday to “stick it to climate change deniers,” a better headline might have read, “The U.S. is worried about climate change, but more than anything, frustrated and confused by its skeptics.”
The Telegraph’s Matt Lewis wrote, “President Obama’s pledge to ‘degrade and destroy’ Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and Syria has led to many to believe foreign policy no longer works in the US.” No kidding, because we here in America really thought things were working quite well despite the murder of Ambassador Stevens, beheading of U.S. citizens, loss of Iraq to 7th-century barbarians, redrawing of maps of the Mideast, formation of an Islamic caliphate, and Iran on the verge of a nuclear weapon. The only people sleeping well at 3am are the clueless first family and Obama's adoring cabinet and advisors. The rest of us are having nightmares and worrying about the future of the world.
The left abhors older, white-haired white men running the country. Call me racist and sexist, but I miss them. In an interview with Bill Kristol, Vice President Dick Cheney stated:
So we're in a very dangerous period and I think it's more threatening than the period before 9/11. I think 9/11 will turn out to be not nearly as bad as the next mass casualty attack against the United States--which, if and when it comes, will be with something far deadlier than [with] airline tickets and box cutters.
Unlike the Chicken Littles running our government, Dick Cheney’s concerns are based upon experience and reality. Our government needs to defend us from terrorists set out to destroy us, not from fantasies of Earth’s far from imminent demise.
And what would an Obama disastrous policy be without partisan accusations? From CNN’’s Paul Begala blaming Bush for funding the war in Iraq at the expense of funding the NIH (despite Bush leaving office six years ago) to a “progressive policy organization” producing an ad accusing Republican budget cuts of hindering the ability of the government to fight Ebola, the lies are snowballing. Last week, Hillary Clinton linked the sequestration to difficulties in fighting Ebola. She failed to mention that Obama signed the sequestration bill but did claim that the CDC does not “have the resources they used to have.”
Back to reality, it was actually Obama who attempted to cut CDC funding. As reported in the Daily Caller:
Obama’s original budget plan for fiscal year 2012 cut funding for a CDC public health emergency preparedness program by $72 million. The proposed cuts would have taken money away from municipal and state health departments to hire health workers and monitor for public health hazards and disease outbreaks.
Furthermore, regarding John McCain’s calls for an Ebola czar, one already exists. The government created an HHS office designed to coordinate and prepare for public health threats (e.g., Ebola). And despite the head of that office momentarily MIA,
... she’s still on the job even though three years ago she was embroiled in a huge scandal of funneling a major stream of funding to a company with ties to a Democratic donor — and away from a company that was developing a treatment now being used on Ebola patients.
In the face of the NIH director blaming the lack of an Ebola vaccine on GOP budget cuts, Governor Bobby Jindal took on the Pinocchios pointing out that funds diverted from programs designed to fight infectious disease have been spent on programs created by Obamacare:
While protecting Americans from infectious diseases received only $180 million from the Prevention Fund, the community transformation grant program received nearly three times as much money—$517.3 million over the same five-year period….The program funds neighborhood interventions like “increasing access to healthy foods by supporting local farmers and developing neighborhood grocery stores,” or “promoting improvements in sidewalks and street lighting to make it safe and easy for people to walk and ride bikes.”
Jindal concluded:
Our Constitution states that the federal government “shall protect each of [the States] against Invasion”—a statement that should apply as much to infectious disease as to foreign powers. So when that same government prioritizes funding for jungle gyms and bike paths over steps to protect our nation from possible pandemics, citizens have every right to question the decisions that got us to this point.
Furthermore, Judicial Watch uncovered the sickening fact that since taking office, the Obamas and Vice President Biden have charged taxpayers over $40 million for vacations (this cost does not include security assets, helicopters and ships near the sites, food, housing, or money spent for staff accommodations and travel).
The Founders, most of whom were older white-haired white men, created a government whose responsibility includes providing for the “common defense” of the citizens and country. A Heritage Foundation essay analyzed: “In providing for the common defense, the goal of the Founders was to build a military sufficiently powerful and capable that America’s enemies preferred not to challenge it.”
As commander-in-chief, Obama is required to protect and defend the citizens of the United States. In spending taxpayer money on climate change, golf course fees, and vacations, he has failed at his most vital role. He is not just sleeping through the 3am wake-up call. He is putting the lives of every single American at risk.
