#YesAllNormal: Standing up for the Average Man
Average men are the most undervalued and maligned group of people in our society. As we have seen recently with the twitter #YesAllWomen frenzy, White Privilege and the frantic alarm of misogyny as a result of the Isla Vista killings, it appears average white men are the single most dangerous group of people in our country. Slate.com writes, “Every few years, the American public has to watch in horror as some white kid goes on a rampage…” and attributes this to “…the rage at the core of Rodger’s horrific acts is not unlike the kind of middle-class, heterosexual, white male rage that drives much of social policy in this country.” The FBI reports that more than half (52%) of homicides are committed by non-white individuals. Slate excuses this by stating, “…the problems of urban violence, which disproportionately involve young men of color, largely happen on residential terrain. Black men are not rolling onto college campuses and into movie theaters on a regular basis to shoot large numbers of people. Usually, the young men who do that are white, male, heterosexual and middle-class.” This, again, seems to diminish the active gang violence that routinely kills and injures multiple people at a time in places like Chicago. Unfavorable statistics showing 43% of Lesbians reporting sexual violence from their same-sex partners is ignored as well.
The #YesAllWomen hashtag, as summarized here, displays a feminist view of men as being obvious threats to women citing 1 in 6 women being assaulted each year. This statistic is used to assert that 1 in 6 men must therefore be rapists, despite statistical acknowledgement to the contrary. Yet another statistic of 10% is used to state: “Not all Men? Imagine a bowl of M&M’s. 10% are poison. Go ahead and grab a handful. Not all M&M’s are poison!” Feminists tweeted that “Every single woman you know has been sexually harassed” and “Imagine how exhausted I am dealing with sexism and misogyny. Every. Single. Day.” A guide to “Rape Culture” details the many ways women face sexism from cruel, entitled men. For example when holding a conversation with a woman: “If you pursue a conversation when she’s tried to cut it off, you send a message. It is that your desire to speak trumps her right to be left alone.” It argues “Rape culture is telling girls and women to be careful about what you wear, how you wear it, how you carry yourself, where you walk, when you walk there, with whom you walk, whom you trust…” The overall theme is clear: “We refuse to accept that nice guys rape, and they do it often.”
From reading Rape Myths and Facts by West Virginia University, you’d imagine most men are exactly as feminists claim them to be. But like the concept of white privilege, when you scratch the emotional surface you see the many ways in which liberalism dilutes the issue. For example, Tolerance.org describes the perks of white privilege (and the disadvantages of not being white) as such: “When I cut my finger and go to my school or office’s first aid kit, the flesh-colored band-aid generally matches my skin tone.” and “When I stay in a hotel, the complimentary shampoo generally works with the texture of my hair.” Under the same theme, a series of quotes from feminists on the difference between sexism and misogyny states: “To be specific, sexism is when men let you jump the queue and get on a crowded bus first…” only to toss in at the end “and then the poor dears, willy nilly, get crushed up against you as their hands "accidentally" cup your breasts in a frenzy of misogyny.”
At the same time feminists mock and dismiss arguments for arming women to protect themselves. Responsible fathers who try to keep their daughters safe are attacked with article headlines like “DADS, YOU DON'T OWN YOUR DAUGHTERS.” Men who demand to have a say in the life of their unborn children are “…inadmissible; and where any man has tried to raise his voice he will have been denounced – as I have been – as an enemy of “a woman’s inalienable right to choose”.” As discussed by Daily Caller Senior Contributor Matt Lewis: In defense of old white men “…I think we can all agree that it's wrong to generalize and stereotype people based on race and gender.” The problem is liberals disagree.
Underneath the layers of hysteria surrounding white privilege, misogyny, cis-sexism and any other concept liberals fabricate to justify their worldview is the reality that average, everyday people live lives completely untouched by them. Liberals care more about concepts than they do the real lives of the people they protect or malign. Murderer and rapist Clayton Lockett, as detailed by Ann Coulter, committed actually horrifying attacks on women and yet the liberal media wept for weeks over his prolonged execution. Elliot Rodger, who inspired the #YesAllWomen frenzy, who was half-Asian and defined himself as “Eurasian”, is the catalyst of proving “white privilege.” Through rabid targeting of defenseless groups like white people, Christians, or men they inoculate themselves from actual criticism.
The honest tragedy is that true victims get buried under piles of theory and opportunistic assault and the most vulnerable group in our society pays the price for it. Despite the mocking or the outrage from liberals over the idea that white men can be victims, the reality is that this group is singularly defenseless against all accusations against them. They are unable to reason against racism towards them because they are shut down with “check your privilege.” They cannot defend themselves against even the most absurd accusation of sexism or misogyny. At every turn they are dismissed and demeaned with arrogant declarations that their arguments are invalid by default. White men experience actual discrimination based solely on their race and their gender.
Forgetting race, men in general simply do not deserve any of this. Regular men marry the women they love, raise children, and work long hours to support their families. Single fathers make up 8% of our population without any acknowledgment. Anti-gun advocates take away men’s ability to protect their families. Progressive welfare systems and liberal feminism tax men’s paychecks and require child support. Certainly middle- class and poor white men have no familiarity with any form of “privilege” their skin color provides them.
Men who do not question their sexuality, are happy being male, and are white, Christian, and able- bodied are required to earn every single advantage they acquire. Without a victim status to fall back on, blame or use to their advantage, they must build their lives by their wit and skill alone. Being “normal” is in itself a disadvantage in our culture. We should have a hashtag for #YesAllNormal to express the frustrations of being a healthy, responsible and balanced individual. While liberals spend their time fabricating new theories to solidify their own social privilege, average men work behind the scenes without any recognition. No one celebrates them for being a man and accomplishing anything. The final civil rights battle, in my opinion, will be winning equal recognition and appreciation for normal men just as they are.
