A Teachable Moment to Help Conservatives Win in 2014

If you want to help conservatives win in 2014 and beyond, you could do a lot worse than to ask your friends about the March for Life.

There's a good chance that they won't have heard about hundreds of thousands of people braving freezing temperatures -- wind chills in the 0- to 4-degree range -- to come from all over the country, with many driving through major snowstorms -- to unselfishly protest for the civil rights of the unborn.

It's almost certain that your friends don't know that hundreds of thousands of Americans have been showing up every Jan. 22 -- the anniversary of when the Supreme Court overruled the laws of all 50 states -- since 1974 to demand that all members of the human race have their right to life protected by the U.S. government.

How is this relevant to helping conservatives win elections?  The answer is that conservatives believe that the truth shall set us free, while liberals count on low-information voters not realizing how seriously the liberals are lying to them.

Modern liberals depend on people being either ignorant or stupid, because modern liberalism is based on lies, ranging from "if you like your health insurance policy, you can keep it" to "I will shut down Guantánamo."  Anyone who listens to liberals saying how great the Obama economy is -- unemployment is down to 6.7%! -- or who sees liberal memes on Facebook -- between 80 and 90% of those memes use "facts," such as the number of jobs created under various Presidents, that are incorrect -- knows that truth is something liberals don't worry too much about.

The media is more than willing to help keep Americans in the dark -- though often it's due to the ignorance of reporters themselves rather than to an intentional effort -- by not mentioning the real "inconvenient truths" of the 21st century -- ranging from the fact that the Earth hasn't warmed for at least 15 years to saying that the unborn aren't human beings.

But if you can show your well-intentioned but ill-informed friends that the media has effectively completely concealed from them the largest ongoing civil rights protest in the history of America, they might begin to wonder what else the media is hiding from them.

And while you can use the wedge created by asking low-information voters about the biggest ongoing protest they've never heard of to address any issue -- from "global warming" to Benghazi -- it's an ideal opportunity to reveal to them that what they think about abortion is mostly wrong.

Thanks to the media, low-information voters have a very distorted view of what abortion in America is really like.

For example, few Americans realize that according to a pro-abortion source, only 1% of abortions are due to rape, and less than 0.5% are due to incest.  While 12% of women say that their health -- including such things as a desire to avoid morning sickness --  contributed to their decision to abort, previous studies have shown that only 3% of women who said that their health contributed to their abortion were told by a doctor that they needed an abortion for health reasons.  Also note that in this context, "health" includes mental health and such things as stress.

Additionally, few low-information voters know that Obama objected to a law that would have required medical care for babies who survived an abortion, or that Obama objected to a law that would prohibit sex-selection abortions -- which usually result in an unborn girl being killed because the parents wanted a boy.

Similarly, few Americans realize that Jesse Jackson said:

Abortion is black genocide...What happens to the mind of a person and the moral fabric of a nation that accepts the aborting of the life of a baby without a pang of conscience?

Nor do most Americans realize that Jackson's comment was not hyperbole.  The leading cause of death of black Americans is abortion.  Black women are 3 times as likely to abort their children as are white women.  This shouldn't be surprising, given that Planned Parenthood, the single largest abortion provider in America, has 79% of its "clinics" in minority neighborhoods -- and no, those "clinics" don't do mammograms.

Given that pro-abortion polls show that only 10% of Americans support late-term abortions and that 84% of Americans believe that the right to an abortion should not be unrestricted for the entire nine months of pregnancy (the current law of the land), many of your low-information friends may be bothered that they've been lied to.  The vast majority of people who support a first-trimester abortion when a woman is raped don't support an abortion in the 28th week because a woman wants a son, not a daughter.  When those people find out that voting for Obama and most other Democrats meant voting for sex-selection abortions, they may change their future voting patterns.

When low-information voters realize they've been lied to, it may then motivate them to take a closer look at what's going on in America, thereby ending their low-information situation.

In the end, conservatives will win elections when the people who vote know the truth.  The strongest antidote to modern liberalism is educating Americans.

Use this year's March for Life as a tool to begin bringing truth to low-information Americans.
