The Dull Bland Leftist Media

The left ever seeks to be what it is not.  It lusts after "justice" and instead creates that totalitarian obscenity "social justice," indifferent to (or more likely simply unaware of) the fact that every effort to create social and economic "equality" with the whip of state power actually diminishes equality of opportunity for the individual.

The left pines that society is not "green," yet it rails against nuclear families and celebrates divorce (which doubles housing demands); it opposes home-schooling in favor of giant, impersonal, energy-eating public schools; and it sneers at nature-loving recreations like fishing and mocks small towns and their values in favor of huge, smoke-belching cities.

The left prattles endlessly about the need for "education," even as it ruthlessly purges all schools of thought except the one demanded by the hive of leftism at this instant and so debases all learning, all research, and all study into puerile shallowness and dim griminess.

The greatest offense which leftism inflicts upon us, however, is that it is so dreadfully and drearily dull.  The tedium of Obama's predictable positions and manufactured emotion over time drains listeners of all real engagement.  Nothing our president does is real, in the sense of being connected to a living human mind and heart.  It is, instead, cardboard leftism, which is dead and cold.

Perhaps the greatest monotony of systemic leftism, however, is the "news."  When leftism is made up entirely of the hoary and broken theories of Marx, Sanger, Kinsey, and other quacks, then facts as such have no value.  Only the rickety framework of leftist theories matters.

This means there is no "news," and there never can be "news" to leftists.  Every story about natural disasters, for example, melts down into some policy jihad to stop "global warming."  Floods and droughts, heat waves and ice storms, listless weather and tornadoes -- everything that might be "news" is nothing new at all to leftists; everything is and everything must be simply evidence that this or that strand of leftist theory is true.

One consequence is that sane and healthy minds simply tune out this noise which passes for news from the organs of media leftism.  Increasingly, this tuning out is also turning off: viewers no longer watch the news media organs and no longer read its print publications.  More and more, viewers do not trust these sources, either.

Part of this decline has to do with credibility.  A recent Gallup poll shows that the steady decline of Americans who have confidence in television news or print newspapers, and this lack of confidence itself, breaks down neatly into ideological groups.  Very few conservatives profess much confidence in television news (18%) or newspapers (15%), while liberals have the most confidence in television news (26%) and newspapers (31%), and moderates fall in between on television news (24%) and newspapers (25%)/

But credibility is only part of the problem.   Newspapers historically have been overtly partisan -- often with "Democrat" or "Republican" even in a newspaper's banner -- but newspapers were wildly popular with Americans until the advent of television.  Most politicians and many politically interested Americans would buy several newspapers with several different political philosophies as a way of getting the true picture of the way things were being reported to Americans.  Newspapers also worked hard to "scoop" competitors -- and all other newspapers were competitors -- which added more spice to news reporting.  Editorial pages directly presented the position of the newspaper on issues, while reporting itself was "news."

All that has changed, as creeping leftism has produced "news" organizations which actually spike stories, which actively conceal the incompetence of their notional "rivals" but ideological Siamese twins,  and which present editorial opinion in the guise of "news."  Now the cantankerous, independent, cynical, competitive, hardworking press which once gave us a dozen different perspectives on men like Jefferson, Lincoln, and Wilson has descended into a lifeless uniformity which is not just distrusted by most Americans, but which even its acolytes on the left see has no punch, no grit, no surprises, and no news  -- and which fewer and fewer of us even deign to notice.
