Interminable Sentence Nails Obamacare

In August 2012, a candidate for Illinois State Senate, District 18, Dr. Barbara Bellar, thought she would start a fundraising event with a lighthearted tone.  She claimed that she could describe ObamaCare (the ACA) in one sentence -- one very long sentence.

Because Dr. Bellar so accurately portrayed the current national sentiment about the ACA, a video of her speaking her very long sentence went viral.  As of 10/7/12, it had received 2,434,958 hits on YouTube.

This is what she said, verbatim.  (Bullets were inserted by this author.)

We are going to be gifted with a healthcare plan [the ACA]:

  • We are forced to purchase, and fined if we don't;
  • Which purportedly covers at least 10 million more people
  • Without adding a single new doctor; but
  • Provides for 16,000 new IRS agents;
  • Written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it;
  • Passed by a Congress that didn't read it; but
  • Exempted themselves from it; and
  • Signed by a president who smokes;
  • With funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes;
  • For which we will be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect;
  • By a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare;
  • All to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese; and
  • Financed by a country that's broke.

Funny, to be sure, but here's the scary part.  It is all true!

"We are forced to purchase, and fined if we don't."

How many Americans think it is proper to be taxed because we choose not buy something, like insurance?  Is this not an unconstitutional assault on freedom?

"Which purportedly covers at least 10 million more people without adding a single new doctor..."

The ACA may "cover" 10 million more people, but they won't be able to find a doctor.  The president's statement -- "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" -- was an empty promise.

"but provides for 16, 000 new IRS agents."

Dr. Bellar cogently shows that the ACA is, at its core, a massive money transfer from patient care to expansion of bureaucracy.

"Written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it; and passed by a Congress that didn't read it."

Is there an American who will forget the immortal words of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: "But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it"?

"but exempted themselves from it."

Why is the ACA the right answer for We The Patients, but not for people in Washington?  When asked directly if he would accept government-mandated health care insurance for himself and his family, President Obama said, "I will have to think about that."  Translation: Are you kidding?  We in the White House and in Congress have perks that are way beyond anything available to ordinary citizens, like super-Cadillac insurance plans and generous, guaranteed pensions after only one day at work.

"Signed by a president who smokes."

Should not people in authority provide role models for those they control?  Should a teacher be ignorant?  Should a policeman ignore the law?  Should the person who claims to reform our healthcare system to improve our health then engage in one of the most unhealthy habits known to medical science?  These were, quite obviously, rhetorical questions.

Is the message in this photograph "approved by Barrack Obama"?  Is this the example by which the president wants to lead America?

"With funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes;"

In case you have forgotten or missed this tidbit that the White House nicely sidestepped, read the article titled "Geithner Failed to Pay Taxes, Hired Housekeeper Without Proper Immigration Documents."  It provides proof of Dr. Bellar's statement above.

A secretary of the treasury who fails to pay his fair share of taxes -- be it through forgetfulness, confusion, or intentional tax evasion -- is not fit for his office.

"For which we will be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect;"

This is a government lay-away plan that you and I wish we could have.  Imagine if you got paid in advance, today, for work you may do (or may not) four years from now.  Sweet deal!

"By a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare;"

Most people know that both programs are headed toward insolvency.  Most people do not know why they are.  Social Security is simple: excessive promises made that cannot be kept because we are all living longer and government did not invest our money wisely.

The reason for Medicare's impending bankruptcy is theft: Congress stole our money.  They ignored the lockbox concept in the original Medicare legislation -- broke open the "lockbox" and took out the money.  They replaced the hard cash with IOUs.  You can invest real money to make it grow.  You cannot do that with IOUs.

The result is what we have now: a health insurance plan called Medicare into which you and I paid our hard-earned money for decades, where Congress absconded with our funds.

"All to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese;"

Dr. Regina Benjamin, a family practice physician, was appointed surgeon general in July 2009.  She certainly is entitled to eat when and how much she chooses.  However, when obesity is the #1 preventable and mostly costly illness in the entire country, is this the image the person in charge of national health wants the American people to emulate?

"Financed by a country that's broke."

I keep wondering how President Obama can say what he does with a straight face.  How can he promise to reduce the deficit and still defend the ACA, his signature achievement that spends well over $1 trillion?  These are dollars that our country does not have and must either print or borrow.  Either way, his ACA spending throws gasoline on our already exploding national deficit, and he knows it.

Elise Cooper spoke with Dr. Bellar recently:

Who is Dr. Barbara Beller?  She is a former major in the U.S. Army Reserves; she studied to become a nun, is a medical doctor, and has a law degree and a Master's in bio-ethics and health policy.  She is currently working on a Master's in public health.  She is running for Illinois state senator.  American Thinker interviewed Dr. Beller about her comments.

Although Bellar did not write the comments that caught fire across the nation, she felt that they resonated with Americans "because of how I delivered [them] and [because of] the fact I was a physician.  Even though people laugh when they hear this, they are stopping and thinking that there is a lot more behind ObamaCare.  For me, the message is that this ObamaCare is just the tip of the iceberg.  We are giving away our civil and religious liberties.  Governor Romney was right -- our moral conscience is being turned over to a fifteen-member doctor advisory board where the government is going to make all the decisions concerning our health care."

Can the doctor give an example of the effect ObamaCare will have on Americans?  Is it possible that choosing a doctor will be out the window -- i.e., that either the consumer will have fewer doctors to choose from or the government will end up forcing doctors to take patients?  Bellar noted, "The key word is choice and not having a free will.  You hit the nail on the head.  I will predict that within five to ten years your choice of a doctor will be reduced.  I work for a hospital. but my problem starts when I try to send a Medicare patient to a specialist.  It will only get worse with ObamaCare."

Bellar does think that there should be some health care reform, which must include being able to buy across state lines, covering pre-existing conditions, and allowing children on a parent's insurance policy until they are twenty-six years old.

With such an impressive resume, why would Bellar want to become a politician?  "I am working against a Chicago machine that needs to be unplugged and disassembled.  I am running to get good, honest people back into the government who believe in transparency.  They must accomplish their goals, or they should not be re-elected.  The other reason I am running is my innate desire to be a servant-leader, which I have accomplished in my previous work experiences.  I am a shaker and a mover."

She wants Americans to understand: "If we don't turn things around locally and nationally, this country will fall off the cliff.  This country is about opportunity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.  I hope people will vote for me.  On the national level, I hope people vote for the Romney/Ryan ticket, because this is a very critical election to save this country."
