Gleason's Gym after Chris Stevens was Killed in Libya
Irish is doing sit-ups outside my office. He left me a few months ago in order to go over to another trainer -- Sing Sing. Sing Sing trained John Duddy, who is Irish, and my Irish student was impressed.
I call him Sing Sing because he told me he did some time there. I did a couple of years at Schuylkill Federal Prison Camp. No props in that. The rumor was that he killed a man. Probably gym rumor. I was a mere tax evader.
Sing Sing must have sold Irish a bill of goods. He is famous for stealing other trainers' fighters. Well, he had a few of his own stolen, so I guess he was getting even with the universe. We were friends, but I obviously couldn't trust him too much. Irish thought Sing Sing was a big deal even though his pro record was 0 and 1. I turned pro at 44, and my record was 4 and 2, all by knockout. I suppose I don't get any respect because I am white, have a Ph.D., and didn't train almost-world-champ John Duddy.
I was a popular fighter. I had many other fights offered to me, but I had to do my bid at Schuylkill. When I got out at almost forty-seven, no one wanted me anymore.
I like Irish. I taught him a lot in a year, and I was thinking of training him for his first amateur fight. Since he left me three months ago, he's slid backward. Sing Sing hardly spends any time with him. I've seen him spar only once, where I used to have him sparring a few times a week.
Sing Sing must have been a hell of a salesman, because he talked Irish into paying him for nothing. Irish was like an Obama voter who buys into something that is negative to him. Vote for Obama and watch your finances go down. Particularly if you're black. Train with Sing Sing and be a prisoner to laziness.
Anyhow, I stay friends with Irish, even after he dumped me as his trainer.
"The world's blowing up," I say. "Egypt, Libya, everywhere. Nine-eleven is 9-11 all over again. They killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, and what are we doing? Less than weakling Jimmy Carter did in Tehran."
"They should have never made that anti-Mohammed film Innocence of Muslims, Irish says. "The demonstrators wouldn't have killed Stevens."
"The attack was pre-planned. Obama wants to blame it on the film, but even the Libyan president admits that there was notice of it weeks in advance. It was al-Qaeda."
"I don't know," Irish says.
"The Jerusalem Post warned about it in advance. It wasn't a silly film that caused the murders. It was Obama's failed foreign policy. Imagine that: he is of Muslim descent, and he can't even build a bridge to the Middle East. How embarrassing. Deadly embarrassing. "
"It's because we treat the Muslims badly." Irish is a typical Irish socialist. He always takes sides against himself. That's why the Muslims might win one day. They never take sides against themselves. They got each other's backs.
"I don't remember any New Yorker murdering a Middle Eastern ambassador. I don't remember our burning the Libyan flag," I say.
"We bomb their people."
"What about the first 9-11? Now this. If some obscure Muslim filmmaker did an anti-Jewish film, would I burn down the Egyptian embassy?"
"These people are violent," Irish admits. "But both sides are getting too angry."
Typical liberal bunk. It's always both sides. Every time the Muslims commit some atrocity, a liberal points to some obscure, irrelevant act of aggression by the West. It's like the Democrats saying the Republicans are also responsible for our declining economy when the responsibility lies on Obama's lack of financial expertise and his ignoring small business. It's like Obama blaming his failures on the Congress and Senate when he controlled both houses for the first two years and never lost control of the Senate.
I don't really want to discuss politics with Irish. There's nothing I can do with European socialism. His mind is closed. I'd like to ask him to come back and train with me, but his mind would be closed on that, too. Some people are lost to the great swamp of political correctness and left-wing ideology.
I hope that when he gets knocked out, he will wake up on the right side of values. I'd like to see the referee adding some conservative philosophy to his left-wing shtick -- for him to wake up with smelling salts and realize that the world is best according to its traditions. To recognize that it is the Muslims and not we who have wounded the universe with suicide bombers, violent demonstrations, and fanaticism.
If you can't see that you are right, you can't say that the opposition is wrong. When Bush and Obama tried to push the idea that the Muslims are a peaceful people, they were wrong. Maybe some are, but there are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, and if even only ten percent of them are potential suicide bombers, we have to worry about 1.6 million of them blowing themselves and us up.
But actually, a Pew Study from May 22, 2007 said that 31 percent of young Muslims think suicide bombing is OK. How many thousands of Muslims are circling around our beds waiting to blow us up and go to Paradise?
Is this the horror that Yeats envisioned -- "And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born"?
Has the beast come down to commit violence in the streets and help fathers strap schoolchildren to bomb belts?
"See you later," I say to Irish. I go into my office and close the door. His attitude towards Muslims is so wrong, yet so politically correct. I'd like to educate him, but you can't educate the brainwashed. All you can do is squeeze the sponges of their socialistic brains out into a glass and watch the clichés run.
