Biden Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog
I find the suggestion that Obama will pick a new Veep in the 2012 election and rid himself of Joe "Gaffe" Biden to be borderline delusional. That such talk has appeared in American Thinker perplexes me all the more.
Granted, the Obama administration must surely see Biden as a true albatross. From his praise in 2007 of Candidate Obama's cleanliness (can you imagine the outrage the MSM would have feigned had a Republican described him as "articulate and bright and clean"?), to his open-microphone F-bomb exuberance on the signing of the Obamacare law), to his recent dopey comments on his President's stance on gay marriage, he has been a perpetual source of embarrassment.
Still, Obama will never rid himself of Biden, however undeniable Biden's penchant for stuffing his foot into his mouth. The reason is that as great a fool as is Biden, Obama is a greater one. American Thinker, I thought we were clear on this: Obama's greatest albatross is his ego. Joe Biden was a gaffe machine well before 2007, as demonstrated by his presidential run in which he was discovered to have plagiarized a campaign speech. If Biden's shoot-first, think-later Lebensprinzip didn't concern Obama then, I see no reason why it should concern him in his reelection hopes.
Further, ousting Joe Biden from his administration would be tantamount to admitting an error, something that Obama has never done in his life, and never will do now that he has attained the highest office in the land. Presidents, particularly Democrat presidents, particularly African-American Democrat presidents, particularly Nobel Peace Prize-winning African-American Democrat presidents, particularly [ad infinitum, ad nauseam] presidents, simply do not make mistakes! (Obama's ego will not allow him even to recognize a mistake, let alone admit to one.)
Instead, they compartmentalize. Their ideas evolve. Their positions spin. They express nuance. In short, they do whatever it takes to make the people understand that what they said yesterday was 100% correct and that what they say today is also 100% correct, even if what they said completely contradicts what they say. They won't call it a contradiction, no matter how manifest to the rest of us; instead, it's the sign of a highly intellectual, thoughtful person who examines an idea from all perspectives. Says so in Politico.
We have no clearer example of Obama's never-wrong mindset as in his reversal on gay marriage. Candidate Obama assured us repeatedly that marriage should be between one man and one woman. Then, mere hours before a fundraiser with George Clooney in Hollywood (a mere coincidence bien sur), in an act of pretense worthy of Animal Farm's Napoleon, he declared "for me, personally" that gay marriage should be legal.
Note the caveat: "For me, personally." It is a subtle way of suggesting that being against gay marriage is the proper stance for Obama the Politician, but being for gay marriage the proper stance for Obama the Person. Thus, each from their individual perspective is 100% correct and proper. No contradiction here!
Obama is to Washington what Elvis was to Vegas. I know lots of people who are Elvis fans, but I've never heard one of them say how really terrific Elvis looked in his great, flowing cape and his ultra-wise bell-bottom slacks and his radiation-blocking sunglasses. Let's face it: whatever Elvis's talent as a singer, he looked ridiculous. Self-evidently so. You never had to draw a schematic diagram proving it; all you ever needed to do was lift a hand his way, palm up, and say "Good Lord! Doesn't he look ridiculous?" No reasonable person would have contradicted you.
But why, then, did Elvis dress like a transgender bullfighter from Mars? Because he was Elvis. He was no lounge lizard crooning Crosby tunes from a half-empty hall; he was the King of Rock-n-Roll, who packed arenas of estrogen-enraged housewives, thousands per show, two shows a day. This was a living legend, selling millions upon millions of albums. This was a god-walks-among-us, who, though dead some thirty-five years, continues to make more money each year that I'll ever see in my lifetime.
Those few lucky enough to attach themselves to this cash cow were no fools. His aids, associates, managers, producers, and private physician did the only logical thing to do when their boss appeared before them in an outfit that would have embarrassed Liberace: they kept their mouths shut. When he asked, "Well, fellas, what do you think?" they answered, "Terrific, boss. Just terrific!"
As well they should have. Just as long as Elvis didn't ask them to dress the same way, who in his right mind would object? Having to choose between gainful employment from an entertainer in a sequined clown outfit and unemployment, I'll pick the gainful employment every time.
Bear also in mind: Elvis's popularity made him powerful as well as rich. Whereas his power lay in the devotion of his fans and the wads of cash they were willing to throw his way, Obama's power is real power -- money, a devoted bevy of sycophants, influence, the military at his beck and call, and his finger on the Button. He is Mega-Elvis, with laser-beam eyes and heat-seeking missiles fired from his ears. Just ask the Taliban.
Obama is all too used to having his way. Other than his unsuccessful run for Congress in 2000, I've yet to come across an episode in Obama's life where someone told him no. A degree from Columbia? Here ya go, Barry! Another from Harvard? Take one from the pile! What, no Nobel Peace Price? Here's one for you, and we won't even ask for the usual box tops or UPC symbols!
Worse yet, anyone who is never told when he is wrong inevitably develops the mindset that he is always right. (Have I mentioned Obama's ego?)
Which brings us back to why he doesn't worry about his Veep. Without a doubt, Obama has convinced himself he can do it all. He's not just the chief executive; he's the entire U.S. Government. Remember, he passed ObamaCare, not Congress. He rescinded "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," not the Secretary of Defense. He ended the war in Iraq, not the military, who serve on his behalf. And he, personally, got Osama bin Laden, not those Navy SEALS. The only reason Obama has Joe Biden as his Veep is that he is constitutionally required to have one; he most certainly doesn't need one. His Veep's only purpose is to fill a chair behind him during his State of the Union address and smile like a chowderhead.
Joe Biden fills both those requirements admirably.
In other words, why not Joe Biden?
