Guerrilla Conservatism
The Occupy Wall Street goons, along with the copycats in other cities, expose just how dependent the left is upon a powerful establishment. Without mainstream media support, without indoctrination in academia, without organizations like ACORN and labor unions providing muscle and organization, the left is a lazy, dull clod. That is why so many members of this "movement" cannot express a cogent thought or discuss genuine grievances.
What is true of Occupy Wall Street is also true of all the other appendages of leftism. So-called "reporters" simply mimic other members of their herd and utterly ignore all news which doesn't fit into their tunnel vision. That is why none of these lackeys ever go into ACORN offices in sting operations and why ex-Congressman Weiner was able to lie without worry about his misbehavior for so long.
Academia, which has long given conservatives Jim Crow treatment, has descended into the muck of censuring science which does not fit precisely into what the politics of the left demands that science should support. Although the corruption was spectacular in the global warming scam, this foul contortion of objective empiricism has so deeply permeated other disciplines that when the hopeless intellectual problems of evolution by natural selection are raised, only those with real courage speak up. Pity also the poor student in public schools or taxpayer-supported colleges who really speaks "truth to power."
Public employees unions, plump sucklings on the public teat, provide not only cushy jobs and levels of security that not even Governor Walker dared challenge, but also benefit packages lavish compared to what those who work in the real world can expect. Public employee bosses -- the real bosses, the labor union chieftains -- luxuriate in power and privilege, all the while claiming that they represent the average American.
Now, what do conservatives face in American life? We have been mocked and hounded in high school and college classrooms, if we have dared to raise our voices. In the workplace, if we work for any major organization, lectures on various topics of believed importance by the left are encouraged or even mandatory -- and we must keep silent here, too. No foundation grants fund our research. No government agency promotes our efforts. Cable television -- not only, but especially "our" public broadcasting -- is a desert.
Despite the Occupy Wall Street protesters, we know that Wall Street is hardly sympathetic to us and that large corporations always follow the path of least resistance, which means sheepishly following every bizarre twist and turn of that psychosis we call "leftism." Indeed, every institution has been infected with varying degrees of that mental illness because the left wants every aspect of human existence to be socialized, secularized, and regulated.
Conservatives operate very differently. We are individuals, and individual liberty is the primary purpose of our political philosophy. We write and we think -- both solitary activities. We host talk radio shows, as Rush has done for more than twenty years, sublimely indifferent to demands to conform. We find no livelihood in the belly of universities or similar ideological fortresses, and so we are self-supporting, small, sometimes one-man organizations. We are, in short, guerrillas in the rhetorical wars for our nation and our culture.
This structure of the war for our society can dispirit us. It seems, sometimes, as if the foul banners of our enemies stretch for miles, and the trudging feet of these conscripted troops sound unstoppable. But we know better. Those who fight with us, those marksmen like the riflemen of Bennington, are wholly committed to our cause, while dull draftees of Occupy Wall Street have no real notion of why they fight us, except for the most infantile propaganda which melts away at the first question from a doubting journalist.
We, on the other hand, know that our comrades in arms really believe in the common cause of conservatism, which is simply shorthand for ordered liberty. The left is filled with conflicting warlords, plied with booty and solemnly reciting profound silliness. Leave ordinary people alone and, except for some sociopaths and masochists, they quickly become "conservatives."
Totalitarians, ultimately, are simply frauds. There is abundant evidence that the Nazis, for example, believed in nothing but nihilistic power, eschewing even Nazism's touted racial theories. The Politburo, likewise, long before 1991 held no one who really believed in the pseudo-science of Marxism; people joined the party for power, perks, and privilege -- and nothing else. Mao believed in nothing at all, except the delight of holding a long lash over the backs of hundreds of millions.
What are we? We are the guerrillas. We can survive without a long and snaking supply train and without cadres of obnoxious political officers. We know our objective -- the grand resurrection of freedom and decency in our nation -- and we also know that leftist leaders are little more than colonial governors whose careers are built on putting us in our place.
Does "guerrilla conservatism" sound bad? It should not: it is the very foundation of our republic.
