Obama's Unreliable Facts From Reliable Figures

Barack Obama is touting another stimulus dressed up a new "jobs bill."  Beyond the obvious attempt to try and box the Republicans into an untenable political quandary, Obama has hit the road to sell his solution to the economic crisis.  Knowing the attraction of infrastructure spending and construction jobs, Obama is deceptively claiming his bill will create thousands of new jobs.  The reality is that his proposal is yet another bailout to preferred states in order to save public sector union jobs.

An integral part of this campaign is Obama and the Democrats' contention is that the previous stimulus was effective -- had it not been for the misfortune of the Japanese tsunami, the Arab Spring and the Republicans in the House, among other unforeseen circumstances, everything would be just humming along.  Therefore, using this faulty premise, a new round of spending would enable the country to recapture the momentum lost due those factors.

Rather than admit the failure of the nearly $1 Trillion stimulus passed in February 2009, Obama and his minions have and are still focusing on their claim that this program in fact created millions of jobs.

As proof of that premise, they cite the purported statistic that he was responsible for creating nearly 2 million jobs.   To the uninformed, which unfortunately is the vast majority of the populace, this sounds quite impressive.  It comes about from a misleading analysis of the establishment data jobs reports as issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Barack Obama has been president since January 20, 2009.  At that time there were 134.6 million non-farm jobs (on a seasonally adjusted basis).  As of the recently issued August 2011 report, the non-farm employment was estimated to be 131.1 million.  The reasonable conclusion is that 3.5 million jobs have been lost since Obama became President, his policies have failed, and the past 32 months have been an obvious disaster for the American people.

So how do the Obama administration, the Democrats in Congress, and many in the mainstream media get away with touting the creation of nearly 2 million jobs?

But what sorts of jobs have been created during these 19 months Barack Obama chooses to focus upon?

The vast majority of jobs that were created during the Obama-preferred jobs-growth cycle were in the comparatively lower end of the wage scales and almost entirely in the service sector.  No economy is going to show substantial growth if the economic activity is centered upon taking care of the sick and indigent or selling each other insurance and coffee, or by collecting waste.

In fact since January of 2009 the nation has lost over 2.1 million jobs in the goods-producing sector, where the bulk of the true wealth of a nation is created.  In the construction arena, where there were to be so many infrastructure jobs in the last stimulus, over 1 million jobs were eliminated.  Yet that is where Obama is again focusing his dishonest pitch for the current proposed stimulus bill dressed up as the "American Jobs Act."

But what concerns the Democrats and Obama is the loss of 556,000 state and local jobs since January 2009, many of which are dues paying public sector union jobs.   Despite dumping hundreds of billions of dollars into the states during the last stimulus, 473,000 state and local jobs have been eliminated since January 2010 to the present.  It is time to rescue those states that voted for Barack Obama by sending money in the guise of infrastructure spending, which will allow those states to spend the money as they see fit.

The American humorist Evan Esar once wrote: "The definition of statistics: The science of producing unreliable facts from reliable figures."  The Obama administration and the Democrats have taken that to an art form as nothing they claim can be believed.

Revised 9/16/08:50 EDT

The lowest number of jobs per the establishment data over the past 32 months occurred in January of 2010 when the BLS reported non-farm employment of 129.5 million.  When one compares that month to the August 2011 report a gain of 1.6 million jobs is recorded.  So by pulling out of the 32 months he has been in office only those months (19) beneficial to him, Barack Obama can claim he has created nearly 2 million jobs; never mind that a net of 3.5 million jobs have been lost since he became President.

On that basis any President can make himself appear to be a success as a job creator as at some point in a four year term jobs growth will occur just by the natural growth in population and business cycles.  As no President before him has been so devious, Obama has taken deception to a new level by this and his many ongoing attempts to fool the American people for political gain.

An integral part of this campaign is Obama and the Democrats' contention that the previous stimulus was effective -- had it not been for the misfortune of the Japanese tsunami, the Arab Spring and the Republicans in the House, among other unforeseen circumstances, everything would be just humming along.  Therefore, using this faulty premise, a new round of spending would enable the country to recapture the momentum lost due to those factors.
