Alas, poor Tony. And poor, poor Britain

" I knew him, Horatio;

a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy.

......

Imperious Caesar, dead and turn'd to clay,

Might stop a hole to keep the wind away."

-- Hamlet (V, i)

Tony Blair is leaving office by surrendering British sovereignty to the EU, and then openly lying about it.  Alas, poor Tony. And alas, poor Britain.

For most of his years in office, Hamlet-like Tony Blair could not make up his mind between his conservative and socialist halves --- so he became both, a walking contradiction.   Britain's domestic policy has been defined by "The Third Way" ---  that is, taxing free markets to buy tens of millions of votes.  But in foreign policy Blair departed from the screaming Party Line handed down by the BBC and Guardian, and kept the Anglo-American alliance alive and well. In his own life Blair started pretty far Left, but is now rumored to be converting to Catholicism, not exactly a popular move among the chattering classes in England. It is a perfect expression of his double-sidedness.

For the United States, Tony Blair has been the only faithful European friend since 9/11. Most of the other Western Euros bugged out of the fight, in spite of sixty years of US protection. Their whole welfare state depends on spending little on defense. But when push finally came to shove when we were attacked on 9/11, aside from Italy and Spain, they were nowhere to be found.

These are the same folks who will now be running "Europe's  foreign policy" from Brussels --- which really means Paris and Berlin's foreign policy. Because the EU is well on the way to centralizing all power in one autocratic government, with its own foreign minister and diplomatic corps, its own armed forces, and its own incredibly arrogant and foolish decrees that supersede national laws. This is the EU-SSR rising --- undemocratic, elitist, and completely self-serving.

To add insult to injury, Europe waxed screamingly self-righteous about its own cowardice in the face of Saddam Hussein, raising such a howling stink that by now the public has all but forgotten that the United States was ever attacked. A wildly high percentage of Europeans and Muslims around the world are now convinced that it was Bush who did the deed on 9/11, a species of mental pathology sometimes called "displacement of blame." That's because the Euromedia have blamed President Bush for six solid years for everything else, including planetary doom. This is the behavior of spoiled and not very bright children. Most Europeans are simple suckers for their media scams, and the media, of course, are run by the political elites.

In spite of endless, vicious attacks within his own Labour Party, Tony Blair stuck with us - and also with the sanest and most difficult foreign policy Britain has conducted since the Cold War. Blair clearly recognized the genuine dangers to the West from violent Islam. That's the Churchillian side of Tony Blair.

Siding with America strengthened Britain against the Paris-Berlin axis. But now Blair has given all those gains away, by surrendering ever more sovereignty to the Brussels gang. France has just elected Nicolas Sarkozy, a good man, but the Villepins and Royals are still waiting in the wings in Paris, just biding their time. In ten years they will get back into power, and anti-Americanism will again rule the day in France and Germany. It is deeply embedded in their culture. So when Britain is swallowed up by the European Union, America will also lose its most natural ally abroad.

The gruesome EU Constitution has now popped up again, after being defeated by voters in France and the Netherlands. It will create an EU foreign minister and a thousand entitlements,  covered up by such blatant lies that even the media and politicians are admitting that, "Yes, we are lying to you."  As the China Post  reports:
"The long ... constitution was turned into a short but complex document ... designed to be incomprehensible to citizens. ... Britain, France and the Netherlands insisted the result must look nothing like a constitution to avoid having to hold a referendum... ." (Emphasis added)
According to Paul Belien, writing in the Washington Times,
"Ambrose Evans-Pritchard announced in Monday's Daily Telegraph that ‘If Europe's political leaders succeed in ramming through a barely disguised remake of the same European constitution rejected by the French and Dutch people, I for one will come off the fence after years of hesitation and join the fight for total British withdrawal from the [European] Union.'"
Whether anybody cares about being lied to is a major test of European democracy today. A citizenry without the effective capacity for outrage has been reduced to a gaggle of slaves. Sleek and spoiled slaves, yes - slaves who are fattened up by the state, but who are still utterly helpless. And the world really hasn't stopped being dangerous. Europe's elites are pulling the strings, and the people are obediently dancing to their puppet masters. In another ten years the EU will start turning the screws tighter, as the population ages and the welfare state declines, and half a billion suckers will be left utterly helpless. They have allowed themselves to be bought off and openly deceived by their own ruling classes. They will have no on to blame but themselves.

The Telegraph of London is now starting an internet petition to demand a referendum on Britain's government coup against the people.

We wish them luck. Watching Britain go down in flames is no fun. We hope that democratic forces in Europe will survive, and prevail in the end. Right now things look pretty bad.
