Cancerous Remnants of the Clinton Era

In contrast to recent revelations of national security leaks occurring within the CIA, consider the absurdly trivial and wholly unsubstantiated charges that ultimately drove House Majority Leader Tom Delay from office.

After presenting a vapid case before numerous grand juries who could find absolutely no fault with Delay, Democrat Prosecutor Ronnie Earl finally landed one that was willing to hand down an indictment for violation of laws that did not exist at the time that Delay was accused of violating them.

Despite this, Delay has since faced relentless attacks from the liberal political machine, abetted by the leftist media, insisting that he be presumed guilty until proven innocent.

Lewis I. 'Scooter' Libby was similarly hounded from his post as Chief of Staff to Vice—president Dick Cheney. Yet nobody officially claims that Libby might have wrongfully divulged the identity of liberal political hack and CIA employee Valerie Plame, but rather that during nearly two years of questioning by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Libby apparently got his facts jumbled to no significant or pertinent degree. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald pressed for indictments, which he now pursues with obsessive determination.

Interestingly, during the past few weeks, Fitzgerald himself was forced to 'correct' bogus statements that he had made in relation to the case. Yet this blatant irony generated no groundswell of double talking and overzealous prosecuting attorneys, demanding that Fitzgerald ought to recuse himself from further involvement on the case, or perhaps squander his life savings attempting to prove his innocence in an effort to forestall an extended stay in prison.

More significantly, in neither of these cases could it be said that the lives and security of the American people faced even a remote threat of being compromised. Meanwhile, the liberal political/media cabal, seeking to reestablish political dominance in America, has on multiple occasions been caught engaging in illicit behavior that goes to the very heart of America's ability to shield its citizens from terrorist activity.

Is it actually possible that those on the left, in their consuming quest for power, would willingly sacrifice the nation's defenses against terrorist attack? Perhaps, in consideration of the facts, it would be more appropriate to ask if their consistent actions could be construed as anything else.

The latest revelation, that Mary McCarthy has been leaking top—secret information from within the Inspector General's office of the CIA, illustrates how insidious the problem has become. It is noteworthy that McCarthy's base of operations resided within the very institution charged with ensuring CIA integrity against subversive activity. Where better to undermine serious investigation of seditious activity than on the inside of the investigative body itself?

Yet McCarthy's case is by no means an aberration. Who can forget the spectacle known as the '9—11 Commission,' ostensibly established for the expressed purpose of identifying failures within the United States Government that left the nation vulnerable to that attack?

Jamie Gorelick, the individual most singularly responsible for those lapses, somehow wormed her way onto the commission. And were it not for the dogged bluntness of former Attorney General John Ashcroft, who publicly exposed her complicity in America's security breakdown, Gorelick might have accomplished what appeared to be her primary mission on that panel, which was to deflect serious scrutiny from the Clintons.

Simultaneously, former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger filled the role of a 'field operative' within this liberal insurgency, removing and presumably destroying crucial documents at the National Archives that might have proven incriminating to the former administration. Again, the first order of business seems to have been political damage control, with the fate of the nation being comparatively unimportant.

Meanwhile, liberals have been busy on Capitol Hill, and on the nightly news, continuing to minimize America's successes in the terror war, while magnifying any possible wrongdoing by American troops. Lately, they advanced their sordid cause by finding a tiny handful of disgruntled military retirees who are willing to publicly disparage Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

In the aftermath of the Delay indictment, and fueled by the malfeasance of California Republican Duke Cunningham, House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi invoked her broad brush and jubilantly painted Congressional Republicans as embodying a 'culture of corruption.'

Meanwhile, Democrat actions have shown for some time that their party embraces nothing less than a culture of sedition. In the past few days, Rush Limbaugh upgraded their status to a 'culture of treason.' That shoe fits.

It might appear that some culpability for the present situation lies with President Bush. Under the auspices of his misbegotten 'new tone,' he allowed far too many appointees from the Clinton Administration to retain their offices and continue their corrosive activity from within the halls of power.

But who could blame him for failing to anticipate the depths of treachery to which they were willing to sink in their pursuit of political power? Nevertheless, with each passing day, they prove their willingness to corrupt the system in perpetual service to their sordid cause.

The damage they have inflicted is grave, and the sooner their likes are broomed from critical positions, the better the nation will fare. It is a hard—learned and bitter lesson that real America should never forget.
