Why Trump's flip-flop on Planned Parenthood is so important
Donald Trump, who last week wanted to defund Planned Parenthood, now isn't so sure.
After saying last week it's worth having Congress shut down the federal government unless Planned Parenthood is stripped of its $528 million in government funding, the Republican presidential candidate changed his tune.
Speaking on CNN's "New Day" Tuesday morning, Trump said that before defunding Planned Parenthood entirely, he would look at the positive aspects of the organization.
"I would look at the good aspects of it, and I would also look because I'm sure they do some things properly and good for women. I would look at that, and I would look at other aspects also, but we have to take care of women," he said. "The abortion aspect of Planned Parenthood should absolutely not be funded."
I have a question. What if the Islamic State had good health clinics for women, where women could get breast exams, pap smears, and their hair and nails done for free? And what if we could donate to these ISIS clinics and be 100% sure that our money would not go to mass executions or genocide, which is also a hallmark of ISIS? Would it be proper to give money to their women's clinics?
Of course not. Because even if you're not directly funding one program, funding a different program frees up money to be spent on the other program. By funding any aspect of ISIS, you are effectively funding everything ISIS does.
The same applies to Planned Parenthood. The government gives taxpayer money for the non-abortion services PP delivers, but that money also goes to pay for facilities where abortions occur and for administrators who supervise abortions. It's called overhead.
Donald Trump is a smart man and must know this. He must know that money for Planned Parenthood pelvic exams also subsidizes the crushing of baby skulls and the selling off of their body parts.
So why is this important? It's important because as a person with no extensive history of conservatism, there is no telling when Trump may switch on a position. He may be for tax cuts today but tax increases tomorrow. He may be against illegal aliens today but for them tomorrow, as he used to be. He's no Ronald Reagan, who, after leaving the Democratic Party (although he would more properly say the Democratic Party left him), spent years and years promoting conservatism before, during, and after his time as governor of California.
That's why if you vote for Trump, you will have no idea what you're getting.
Having said that...I still love how, rhetorically, he is keeping illegal immigration on the front burner and making it a talkable subject again! I don't trust him, but at the moment, he is doing the national conversation a great deal of good.
