July 5 on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” former Obama official Susan Rice said this: “The president went to Mount Rushmore and then stood at the White House yesterday on our independence weekend and decided that he was going to stake his legacy and his campaign on preserving Confederate monuments and the relics of slavery.” One wonders how Rice would know that the president had “decided” such a thing, for nowhere in his July 3 address at Mt. Rushmore nor in his July 4 address, did President Trump use the word “Confederate,” and when he spoke of “slavery,” it was in the context of its evil.
